Language Proficiency Tests

Singapore is an English-speaking country. The official medium of instruction in Singapore is English. So in order to gain admission into the Singaporean University, students are required to demonstrate their level of proficiency in English language. Though, this isn’t a mandatory prerequisite, but several Singaporean Universities require you to prove competence in English language.

The English language proficiency tests accepted by Singaporean Universities include-

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

The TOEFL is designed and conducted by ETS (Educational Testing Service). It is a global standardized English language test that evaluates the understanding and communication proficiency in the English language of the applicants who wish to pursue their studies in Singapore. It tests the reading, listening, writing and speaking English language skills. Internet and written versions of the test are available. The TOEFL test has four parts- Reading, Speaking, Writing and Listening. Each of the four parts is scored from 0 to 30. Overall, it scores you on a scale of 0-120 points. The TOEFL score is valid for 2 years.

Singaporean Universities consider a TOEFL iBT (Internet-based) score in the range of 90 to 100, and TOEFL PBT of 600 and above. The accepted score varies from university to university.

IELLTS (International English Language Testing System)

The IELTS is a globally recognized standardized test that evaluates the English language competence and ability of the applicants who wish to pursue education in Singapore. The IELTS exam is a 2 hours and 45 minute test and is split up into four sections, namely Listening, Writing, Reading and Speaking. The score ranges on a scale of 1 to 9 with band 1 as a Non-user of English language and band 9 as an Expert user of the English language.

The accepted average IELTS score by Singaporean Universities is 6.5 and above.

Standardized Tests

Students who wish to pursue graduate study in Singapore are required to prove their readiness for the study through entrance exams- GMAT or GRE, depending on the discipline.

GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test)

The GMAT is a computer-based standardized test conducted by the GMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council) for admission into the graduate management programs- MBA, Master of Finance, Master of Accountancy, etc. This entrance exam assesses the aptitude and capability of the applicants for management programs. It is a four hour exam and has four parts, name Quantitative, Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning and Verbal.

The accepted GMAT score by Singaporean Universities is above 600. The score varies from university to university.

GRE (Graduate Record Examination)

The GRE is a computer-based standardized test that assesses the mathematical, verbal and analytical skills of the applicants who wish to seek admission in the graduate schools in Singapore. The ETS (Educational Testing Service) conducts GRE. It assesses the aptitude of the applicants for graduate-level program.  The GRE revised general test scores are accepted by the Singaporean Universities. Though, some universities may require GRE Subject test scores, too. The GRE Revised General Test includes three parts-Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning. Each part has a different score scale, the scores for Quantitative reasoning section are reported on a scale 130-170, in 1-point increments; for Verbal Reasoning on a scale of 130-170, in 1-point increments; and for Analytical Writing on a scale of 0-6, in half-point increments.

The accepted GRE score by Singaporean Universities is 320 for Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning, and 3.5 for Analytical Writing. The score varies from university to university.

How do these tests help students with admission at Singaporean Universities?

There is no doubt that entrance exams are important to gain admission in Singaporean Universities. Though, we agree that these exam scores do not define students potential or capabilities completely, but they serve as a deciding factor as to which applicant will be the best fit for the program. The weightage of the entrance exam scores is university specific. It varies from university to university.

English Language Proficiency Test- TOEFL/IELTS helps students in demonstrating their proficiency level in the language. As the official medium of instruction is English, so this is a prerequisite for most of the Singaporean Universities. Students with good scores at TOEFL/IELTS are at an advantage when seeking admission at the Singaporean Universities.

The GMAT is an indicator of students’ academic performance.
